“Cornelia Street”

“Cornelia Street” is one of the underrated songs from Lover, which saddens us greatly. It opens with a really cool sound, from what we can assume is a synthesizer. The single note progression essentially stands in for percussion in the beginning of the song, before the beat drops. Therefore, the beat only needs to come in later, which allows Swift to create a lifted sound. Because the sound quality is so light, especially when the chorus is sung in a head voice, listeners almost get an aerial view of the scene Swift’s lyrics describe. Moreover, a listener might not realize from simply hearing it, but the lyric “‘I rent a place on Cornelia Street’” is actually in quotation marks. Moving in between narration and dialogue adds more dynamics to this already gripping track.

Track: staccato parts of the track

Best lyrics: “And baby, I get mystified by how this city screams your name / And baby, I’m so terrified of if you ever walk away / I’d never walk Cornelia Street again”
