It was a jam-packed afternoon for Webb sports on September 24th with cross country hosting their first and only home meet and a home game for VWS volleyball, meaning sparse crowds by the pool deck. Nevertheless, Webb varsity water polo secured their second home win of the season after a narrow 12-11 home win against Ontario High School.

The Gauls started the first quarter strong with an early 4-1 lead in the first quarter thanks to goals from Aidan Gutierrez (‘22), Winston Li (‘21), and Matthew Gaw (‘21). As the game progressed, problematic 2-meter defense and poor 6-on-5 execution by the Gauls kept Ontario trailing close behind. Ontario came as close as a one-goal deficit as defensive issues continued in the 2nd half. Thankfully, fourth-quarter goals from Nicholas Lee (‘22) and team captain Malachi Cassel (‘20) ensured a Webb victory. Patrick Doñez  (‘21) performed exceptionally between the pipes with seven saves to help the Gauls to a win.

Mattew Gooch (‘22), a winger on the varsity squad, said, “We may have won, but we definitely could have played way better as a team.”

Mason Letteau Stallings (‘21) said, “A dub is a dub, we can’t take it for granted .”

The Webb water polo team will play their second league game of the year at home on October 3rd against West Covina High School – a game that will be vital in their bid towards a CIF playoffs berth.
