Record: 6-10
Michael Dunford, head WSC basketball coach:
Challenges: “There were many challenges that faced the WSC Basketball team, including COVID, game cancellations, and not having the ability to play in front of our home fans throughout the majority of the season. However, there was one game when the crowd was there. They really made us feel at home. It made a difference.”
Successes: “There were many successes this season, including going .500 in league, at a record of four and four. More importantly, being invited to compete in the CIF 5AA basketball playoffs and also having the ability to work with some of the younger players to develop their skills for years to come.”
Highlight Athlete: “There’s a lot of kids who I could reference but the most improved, I’d have to say Stuart Lin (‘22). He worked very hard this year and he improved over the course of this season. I’d like to say that all my seniors were great leaders both on and off the court. I was very, very happy to have them this year and for the past four years.”
Mikey Chai (‘22) and Kalman Dong (‘22):
Challenges:
Kalman: “Some of the challenges this season were the cancellation of games and certain people, like me, being out due to COVID-19. We didn’t have a lot of time to play together.”
Mikey: “One challenge for sure was coming back from breaks. I feel like we were almost at a peak right before breaks, and when break happens, a bunch of us forget to play basketball, so that sucks. There has been a lot of restrictions like having to practice outside for the first week back from break, which was tiring and bad for our knees.”
Successes:
Kalman: “Overall, I think our team has improved and we bonded into a cohesive unit. I am proud of the effort we put in daily and how our team is playing.”
Mikey: “So far with everything we’ve had to go through, I feel like our season has been very successful in terms of team bonding. I’ve grown closer with a lot of underclassmen and have been able to mentor them and teach them a good work ethic.”
Favorite memory:
Kalman: “My favorite memory was our trip to Avalon, where we travelled on the ferry. It was fun and we were able to get dinner in Avalon after our win.”
Mikey: “I agree, Avalon was an incredible bonding experience. I love these guys.”
