Triathlon

Geoff Owers, mathematics department faculty:

Challenges: “We had wanted to utilize the pool in the mornings and after school more, because several of our triathletes really like to swim. We couldn’t always get lifeguards for the pool, but we swam on the days when we were able to. We got creative with our workouts and did a lot of relays, where one person would swim before tagging off to a person who took off on a run. We set up relay teams and made some friendly competition out of it. One time, the team swam and ran in really cold rainy weather because that’s the way it was the day, we had the pool.  It was a character-building day!”

Successes: “We did a couple of full triathlons, where the athletes swam 500 yards, biked about eight miles, and then ran three miles. Everyone pushed themselves out of their comfort zone and learned how to put the three events together, which includes the key transition from the swim to the bike and the bike to the run… it’s harder than it looks!”

Highlight Athlete: “As far as showing improvement, really that could be said for all of them, but some that stand out are Falcon Fu (‘23), Emily Thornton (‘idk), and Zac Wang (‘23). As far as leadership, Logan Causley (‘22) showed a lot of leadership, especially with the pool workouts. Also, Scott Wishek (‘25), being only a freshman and often quiet, was a great leader by example.”

Logan Causley (‘22):

Challenges: “Triathlon is a mentally and physically demanding sport so there will always be challenges. We had some logistical challenges with being able to share the pool with VWS water polo or sometimes, the winter weather would hinder our workouts, but we always shifted and continued. On an individual level, it was a challenge to push myself past what I had previously thought I could do to increase my endurance and overall time in races.”

Successes: “I have been on the triathlon team all four years at Webb, and I think this year our greatest success was seeing new people willing to try new things and go the extra mile. We had some record breaking races this year and a lot of heart put in to push those limits. As a leader on the team, it was great to see.”

Favorite Memory: “My favorite memory was at the end of the season’s first full triathlon as we cheered on the last few people to cross the finish line. With the sun setting, we all sat down together, exhausted, and had a moment of acknowledgement of our accomplishments. We finished with a strong Webb cheer and headed back to campus.”
