Spike Lee
The always outspoken and unapologetic Spike Lee has produced over 35 films in his career, some of which dealt with race as well as the trials and tribulations of being colored. Lee, who has crossed the boundary from the film industry to sports, represents the city of New York to the fullest. As a child, born Shelton Jackson Lee, moved to Brooklyn in his early years. There, Lee found his respect for the various cultures that encapsulated the diversity and spirit of Brooklyn. In his career, Lee’s works were nominated for three Academy Awards.
In November 2015, Lee was awarded an Honorary Oscar for his work on screen and in his community. On the issue of race in the film industry, Lee said, “It’s easier to be president of the United States as a black person than be head of a studio. Honest.”
Lee continues to support the black community in his work on and off screen.
