Harvey Milk
Harvey Milk is known for his ceaseless confidence in speaking out for those who felt they could not. Growing up in Woodmere, New York, Milk moved to San Francisco, where he declared his candidacy for the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Even though he lost the race, Milk co-founded the Castro Village Association, a group that organized predominantly LGBT businesses, soon after. In 1978, he was inaugurated as a San Francisco City-County Supervisor and made national and international headlines. Harvey Milk was one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States. During his time in office, he established an alliance between minorities and encouraged them to fight against injustice. Milk, a figure of hope for LGBT people everywhere, was tragically assassinated nearly a year into his time in office.
