Patrisse Cullors
Growing up, Patrisse Cullors saw family and friends around her incarcerated and mistreated at the hands of the state. After coming out as queer, Cullors moved out of the house and began making connections with other African American women who had also witnessed the injustice she had. She went to UCLA where she received her degree in religion and began performing interactive art pieces, some focused on police brutality. Cullors is a cofounder of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement, which fights for racial equality, and the ‘Dignity and Power Now’ movement, which helps incarcerated people and their families seek justice. Cullors’ activism and freedom fighting has earned her many awards and titles such as the Sydney Peace prize and Civil Rights Leader for the 21st Century and she continues to speak up against racism and discrimination.
