Nicholas Lee

Nicholas Lee (‘22), a day student from Rancho Cucamonga, is a seasoned competitor in the SCRIPPS National Spelling Bee. He memorized the definitions and spellings of 4,000 words in a span of two months. His competitive spelling career stemmed from automatically qualifying for regionals when he placed first in his fifth grade spelling bee. After winning regionals, Nick advanced to the SCRIPPS National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C.. In 2015, he tied for 51st out of a pool of 200 contestants; in 2018, he improved his standings by placing 46th out of a larger pool of 500. While Nick’s initial study strategy was hard-core memorization, he developed a better understanding of rules as got familiar with their languages of origin. Not only does he have a massive vocabulary, but Nick’s experience at SCRIPPS also imparted on him a strong love for literature and writing. At Webb, Nick’s favorite class is Foundations of Civilization because he enjoys looking at different perspectives of morality. “I am not really sure about my future career yet, but I want to go where I am needed and can make a big impact.” Outside of spelling, Nick enjoys aquatic sports and plays water polo on the varsity level.
