Mariia Lykhtar
Mariia Lykhtar (‘22) is a language-enthusiast who has mastered English, Russian, Ukrainian and Spanish, and is currently self-teaching herself German, French, and Latin. While her two first languages include Russian and Ukrainian, Mariia started learning English when she began her education at an international school in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Her best advice for Webb students who wish to learn a new language is “to watch movies, read books, and immerse yourself in an environment that speaks that language.” In fact, Mariia has learnt most of her German through watching Friends in that language with subtitles. Besides developing her passion for languages, Mariia would like to become either a mechanical engineer or an actress in U.S. films. She chose Webb because the ideal proximity to Hollywood may help her get a headstart on her acting career. “If I keep my grades up, my parents promised that I’ll be able to attend auditions on weekends.” Although it has only been a month since freshmen arrived on campus, Mariia has already made her mark starring in the freshman performance of Theme Nights as Cinderella and as a valuable singles player on the VWS varsity tennis team.
