Baseball: America’s Pastime
Take me out to the ball game! In this four day Unbounded course, students got to live out the experience of this classic baseball song. Alongside Steve Wishek, Director of Athletics, and James Huerta, humanities department faculty, baseball fans had the opportunity to reflect on the cultural importance of this sport by visiting the spring training facility in Arizona and creating a video journal about their experience. The first day was spent learning about the art of interviewing through a group discussion and documentary, which gave the students some background on how to properly conduct their own interviews with the players and fellow fans. After a six-hour drive to Phoenix, students spent their next three days out on the ballfield, meeting players, watching their favorite teams play, all while learning about how the business of baseball reflects the immigrant experience. A combination of games and cultural experiences made this Unbounded an overall home run.
