Research with Drones: The Role of Technology in Biology and Conservation
As the human race continues to damage the earth’s ecology, more and more creative conservation methods pop up as up-and-coming scientists research technology to nurture the environment. In this Unbounded course, students explored some of this technology, like using drones, taking biodiversity data, or experiencing senses the way animals do, and used it to analyze data in specific biomes and habitats. Using a software called “R,” students analyzed the biodiversity of the endangered coastal sage scrub biome. On another day, students visited the San Diego Zoo where they tested tech that allowed them to see through sound by using vibrations felt in their feet, the same way elephants do. The goal was to establish a connection between humans and animals so they are more aware of the need to conserve wildlife. Students used the new technology to stretch their thinking to new unbounded heights which helped them learn how to make a difference in the world towards better conservation of our planet.
