Following a variety of different aesthetics, TikTok has popularized new fashion trends and styles. Three of the most popular aesthetics on the app over the past few months are cottagecore, Y2k, and Alt styles. The cottagecore aesthetic focuses on nature and nostalgic activities such as picnics and baking, so the fashion surrounding it mirrors its softness. It is all about pastels and light colors, long flowery dresses and skirts, along with headbands, headscarves and dainty shoes to top off the look. On the complete opposite side of the spectrum, Alt styles, short for alternative, focus on darker and harsher harsher aesthetics. “Alt” is an all-encompassing term used to describe the emo, indie, and scene styles brought to the new decade. Alt people can be seen rocking an all-black look with eyeliner, chunky boots, and dyed hair. Probably one of the most popular fashion trends on the app, the Y2k aesthetic is bringing back trends from the late 90s and early 2000s. With bright colors, low-rise jeans, tennis skirts, and sparkles, this aesthetic is inspired by looks in movies such as Legally Blonde and Clueless.
