In the heart of Texas, a state notoriously known for everything big, a trio of bright minds from Webb took on the grand stage of the VEX Robotics World Competition. From April 25th to 27th, Jonathan Li, Aaron Yang, and Tyler Liu ventured to Dallas, representing not only their school but also their passion for engineering and robotics.
With over 13,000 registered teams across ten divisions, the VEX Robotics World Competition is a spectacle of innovation and competition. Amidst the sea of this year’s participants, only 800 teams qualified for the event. Every year, VEX Robotics gives a new challenge to these young engineers in which they must build a new robot to participate in unique and exhilarating challenges. This year’s task revolved around a soccer-inspired challenge, demanding strategic prowess and driver finesse.
For Jonathan Li (‘25), Tyler Liu (‘25), and Aaron Yang (‘25), their journey wasn’t merely just showcasing their engineering abilities; it was about pushing the boundaries of innovation.
“Unlike the past year’s event, this year’s game was mainly focused on team communication and driver skills,” Aaron said.
Amongst the other competitors, the team was determined to make their own unique design with a distinctive robot design. In a game where every move counted, their machine needed to navigate the game field, scoring goals while strategically preventing opponents from doing the same.
Ultimately, the team’s journey to the world stage was not a sudden leap but a culmination of years of dedication. Having begun their robotics journey in their freshmen year, each member honed their skills over the years, culminating in a triumphant debut at the VEX Robotics World Competition.
As the team returns to Webb’s campus, their achievement in becoming high school division champions stands as a testament to the boundless possibilities of youthful ingenuity and determination for success.
