If sleeping beauty existed in real life, it would be Joy Li. Upon emerging from her Appleby room, she transforms into the unhinged Renfield in Dracula, Mrs. Jennings in Sense and Sensibility, and Matron Mama Morton in Chicago –– all roles where she unleashes her inner craziness as a seasoned theater star. Whether as head dorm prefect or head’s student leaders council member, Joy never fails to go above and beyond for those around her, even earning her the professional bug killer reputation. Besides squashing flying spiders, managing earwig infections, and rescuing lizards all around the dorm, Joy also enriches every Harkness discussion. In Advanced Studies Short Story, she fell in love with nonlinear forms of storytelling and integrated the theme of a lying narrator into the award-winning experimental screenplays and films she produced during the summer. Though Joy can passionately hold a conversation about any topic –– figure skating, mummy diets, and the complex layers of sexuality –– her social battery quickly runs out. Hence, her ideal weekend would involve waking up around 1 p.m., ordering McDonald’s alone, and binging her comfort shows like Bridgerton. As Joy attends New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in the fall to study Film and Television, she will thrive on all that New York City has to offer and continue to pursue her calling to make film, with a comfortable bed, of course.
