What are Webbies dressing up as for Halloween?

Webb students gathered on Thursday, October 31st in their most creative and fun costumes for the annual Halloween costume contest. The energy buzzed with excitement, and many students wore unique costumes. “It’s all about having fun and expressing ourselves,” said Joyce Zhao (’25), who dressed up as the chef from Ratatouille for the contest. The event was a lively embodiment of school spirit, bringing the Webb community together as everyone paraded down the Halloween contest in their different costumes.

Yuki Layman (’25) and Caitlin Delgado (”25) channeled their inner Blair Waldorf and Serena Woodsen from the American teen drama television series Gossip Girl. “We thought it would be a perfect duo costume and something easy and cute to do,” said Caitlyn Delgado, left on the photo. Wearing classic preppy outfits with plaid skirts, collared white shirts and colored ties, they brought the drama and style of the Upper East Side to Webb.

Code of Conducts: Dancers versus audience perspectives
WSC students from the upper dorms participate in this year’s Webb Idol. During rehearsals every evening, students would meet with their choreographers and practice the dances for about one and a half hours. “It is a great chance for us to get to know our classmates and dormmates better,” said Victor Li (‘26), who has participated in the past two years of Webb Idol. “It is always so fun to meet new choreographers and learn the new dances they bring to our dorms.”

Webb students dance and celebrate Black History Month in Stockdale during Black Excellence and Joy night on February 22nd, 2025. The night was full of music, food, and culture, but does the singular event do the entire month of February justice? “Black History Month is important to bring recognition and remembrance into every day of February” said Saraya Chigoji (‘27), a member of Webb’s Black Affinity. “I think Webb should do a better job of having more reminders, more statements, bringing in speakers, and having more shout outs on why Black History Month is so important.” The event left members of the community in high spirits, yet the true meaning of the month seemed to go partially unnoticed.
Does Webb acknowledge Black History Month enough?
The cool winter air chills; as you walk to Stockdale Community Center, you can feel how excitement buzzed through the air. Walking through the doors, you're quickly greeted by winter fun. “The vibes defiantly gave winter wonderland,” Evelyn Fu (‘27) said. “The outfits were sparkly, and fun.” The only thing cooler than the feel in Stockdale was the outfits showcased by students.
Winter Formal Fit Checks
The sun shines above lower campus on a warm February day. Students do not hide from the outdoors as spring-like temperatures emerge following a week of rain. “When it rains, if I'm indoors, I’ll be happy,” said Emma Kaivan-Mehr (‘27). “I think it’s peaceful in a way.” In sunny Southern California, the rain can be a nice change from the warm temperatures that usually exist.

In February 2025, Los Angeles witnessed significant anti-ICE protests in response to intensified immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump's administration. Thousands of demonstrators marched from Olvera Street to City Hall and subsequently blocked the 101 Freeway. “By the time we were on the street, you couldn't see anyone—it was just like a sea of people,” Priscilla Centeno (‘24) said. Despite the scale of the protests and the freeway blockade, no arrests were reported.
How America swung right and what it cost us
Skimming the brief prompt for his in-class essay in Advanced Studies Existentialism, Andy Liu ('26) feels the pressure mounting. With no chance for revisions, every word must land perfectly. He knew the clock would be ticking, and preparation is key to formulating a clear and concise argument in 70 minutes. “It’s one and done,” said Jaeho Lee (‘28), echoing the stress of high stakes writing.

While watching Terrifier 3 for the first time, Christina Young could not keep her eyes open as she was grossed out by the disturbing murders. The Terrifier films have always been popular for its comedic killer, Art the Clown, and for the gruesome killings that many see as a challenge to watch, and others see as unnecessary and the murdering of children immoral. “I have watched only Terrifier 3, and that was enough for me,” said Christina Young (‘25). “I was terrified to say the least.”

Ash Cortéz ('28) stands in the Quad, holding the Mexican flag as she looks up at the American flag towering above her—a moment that reflects the complex emotions surrounding immigration policies and national identity. “The protests had a profound impact on me—they brought me down at times, but they also inspired me. I wanted so badly to be there, to be out in the streets, actively supporting the cause” said Ash Cortéz (‘28). This quote shows Ash's struggle, feeling both discouraged by the challenges her community faces and inspired by the protests.
Anti-Ice protests and immigration policy: how Webb students are affected
Language exclusion is a complicated issue at Webb. On one hand, Webb wants its students to feel comfortable around campus by being able to speak their native language. On the other hand, it has become an issue around campus where some students speak in their shared language, leaving others feeling awkward. “I think [language exclusion] has gotten better in the past year, but [our efforts] are definitely not enough,” Triet Pham (‘26) said.
Awareness alone will not solve language exclusion — we need kindness

For some, walking thousands of steps and navigating through swarming crowds without a clear path may seem like the worst nightmare; however, Freya Fu (‘26) lives for this laborious pastime known as shopping. Despite being stuck on campus, this Jameson resident constantly pursues alternative ways to enjoy her favorite hobby. This summer, while in Shanghai and Vegas, Freya spent her time well — shopping and managing a Depop side hustle, where she sold vintage clothing. As any avid shopper knows, it requires a consistent, long-term effort to create the perfect wardrobe. Freya not only employs this towards her closet, the majority being from Brandy Melville and Edikted, but towards her resume as well. In her free time, she loves improving upon violin, debate, and tennis, all of which she has practiced for more than five years. In the future, she hopes to channel her favorite TV show, Gossip Girl, by opening a boutique while studying business and marketing in New York. As for the WCC, she plans to use her expertly curated sense of style to continue Hot Take Tuesdays and emphasize a variety of opinions, assuring readers she will incorporate wide-ranging styles as the new Editor of Opinion.  Favorite Song: Chamber of Reflection by Mac DeMarco
