Upper Dorms light up for the Holiday party

Every Monday, prefects gather in the Arts Lab to brainstorm ideas and finalize plans for the upcoming holiday party. Led by Dr. Ardina Greco, prefect council advisor, the prefects have been organizing the event since before Thanksgiving break, with each prefect contributing ideas to make the evening memorable. “Every time the prefects host some sort of event on campus, there’s a lot of work that happens behind the scenes that people don’t always recognize,” Sydney Morales (‘25) said. Every year, the Holiday party is the most anticipated event of the winter season.

As the sun’s rays disappear into the night, the twinkling Christmas lights will take their place this Sunday. On December 15th, the prefects are throwing the annual Holiday party at the Upper Dorms. The evening promises to blend lively entertainment with a warm community atmosphere. 

“For me, it’s exciting and rewarding to see everything come together,” said Sydney Morales (‘25), head prefect. “When it’s done, everyone’s just mutually celebrating another successful event.” 

The night will include a roast poem session, a cozy Christmas movie screening, and an open mic. For refreshments, the party will feature hot chocolate and cookies alongside a surprise treat made by Dr. Greco. 

The roast poem is sure to be one of the evening’s highlights, with Ian Kimbell and Sawyer Belville, science department faculty, teaming up to deliver some epic roasts. Whether you are the subject of the roast or just there to enjoy the show, it promises to be the funniest part of the night. 

“Mr. Kimbell and Ms. Bellville are friends, so I think that’ll be really funny to watch,” said Julian Ratinoff (‘25), prefect.  

Alongside the laughs, Dr. Brendan Beikmann, science department faculty, will be dressing up as Santa Claus, giving everyone a chance to snap some festive photos.  

The open mic, led by Sophy Sun (‘26), will allow students to showcase their artistic skills. Whether it is singing, poetry, or dancing, it will be a chance for students to shine and share their talents. 

Another feature of the celebration is the Gingerbread House contest, where teams will compete to create the most impressive edible structures. From intricate designs to hilarious disasters, the contest is expected to bring an extra layer of fun to the festivities. 

While the Upper Dorms will be festively decorated with Christmas lights outdoors, the Ruddick Room will serve as a cozy haven where students can escape the cold and enjoy a classic Christmas movie. 

As for the food, following the community dinner, the party will feature delicious hot chocolate and cookies. Dr. Greco will be making fresh crepes, offering both sweet and savory options to cater to all tastes. For those looking for something lighter, there will be fresh fruit available as well. 

“We are still in the process of figuring out what snacks we’ll have,” Sydney said. “What is certain is that we are going to have crepes made by Dr. Greco.” 

Whether you are in it for the gingerbread competition, the roast poem, or just some good food and company, this event is not to be missed. Bring your friends and your holiday spirit for a night of fun memories!

Students fill nearly every seat in the dining hall, catching up with friends over lunch. Food is undeniably an important part of the Webb life, so a total of 250 students and faculty communicated their opinions about the dining hall food through the food survey sent out by Michael Hoe, Assistant Head of School. “It's empowering to be able to give feedback on stuff that's going well and not going well,” Hanbo Xu (‘25) said. It has been about a month since students took the survey; what is occurring behind the scenes?

The numbered phone stand used for Reboot November in South Hutch dorm was an efficient system that helped keep track of participating students. The stand, numbered from 1 to 30, allowed students to place their phones in designated slots, making it easy for dorm prefects to monitor participation. “It’s a simple and effective way to stay organized, even though I didn’t participate, I noticed how the system made it easy for everyone to keep track and to make sure no one missed out on their rewards,” said Jarra Jallow (’25). This process helped maintain order and ensured everyone’s phone was accounted for during the challenge.
Week 3 of Reboot November: can Webb earn a no-school day?

This is the first time students have had to sit outside to accommodate the larger number of students in a co-ed ceremony. “We had new signers for the Honor Pledge and escorts sit outside the chapel and watch the ceremony on TVs, which was a new addition this year,” said Scott Wishek (‘25), chair of the honor council.

Student government meets in the Fawcett library to discuss the budget and decorations for the Winter Formal. Since Homecoming at the start of November, members of the student government have been diligently planning another exciting event, which will take place at Webb. “The Winter Formal Committee and I all hope for a fun event that will uplift community spirit during a time of stress and hard work,” said Albert Luo (‘27), sophomore vice president . Student leaders finalize plans including the budget, decorations, and assignment of roles, hoping for community engagement and a time where everyone can de-stress and have fun.

From making your morning latte to producing a hit song, Judcody Limon is a man of many talents. When not working at Webb, you can find him experimenting with beats and writing lyrics. "I'm feeling confident enough about [making music] to where I'm pushing out my own stuff as opposed to holding off until I feel good enough about it,” said Judcody Limon.

Students from Advanced Studies Fascism, a class that explores the rise and impact of fascist regimes, conduct research for their final projects. “Webb classes allow me to explore topics that I’m interested in. I feel like I have improved significantly as a writer,” Joyce Zhao (‘27) said. Like many other Advanced Studies humanities courses at Webb, Advanced Studies Fascism was created by a faculty member and challenges students to critically analyze historical events.

Here’s what he’s said he’ll do.” “I didn’t see many people affected positively or negatively by the election,” Emma said. This lack of emotion concerning Trump’s reelection was prevalent in the Webb community post-election.

Evelyn Fu (‘27), a Webb wrestler, grabs her opponent’s legs as the teams watch inattentively. As Evelyn scores 3 points for her takedown, the crowd erupts into cheers. “I want [the wrestlers] to lock into the present moment because the present moment is all we have,” said Rieanna Duncan, the girls’ head wrestling coach. The wrestling team won both schools in the tri-school meet with confidence, and both the coaches and athletes look forward to more matches in the future.

Elena Petrova (‘25) is a passionate and dedicated journalist with the hopes and dreams of making a positive impact on her home country of Russia. Born and raised in Moscow, Elena came to Webb to seek a broader perspective and to escape the dictatorship of her country. She currently works as an English tutor for Russian students and hopes to one day return to her homeland to pursue investigative journalism, focusing on political murders, war crimes and corruption. In her personal time, Elena enjoys crocheting and watching true crime documentaries, especially Russian cases from the 80s and 90s. Elena’s goal for this year’s publication is to reach a wider audience. Inspired by the work of journalist Elena Milashina, whom she shares a name with, Elena seeks to follow in her footsteps. Elena is motivated by the impact Milashina’s investigations have had, as they have helped hundreds of families find out what is happening to their country and to their loved ones.
