One of the many leadership groups at Webb, student government consists of student executives, class officers, and student commissioners from across all grade levels to come together and plan events that boost school spirit and foster community. Some of these annual student events include Homecoming, Prom, and Back to School Dance.. However, as confirmed by StuGov, the group is hosting another social event taking place in Stockdale on Saturday, January 18: Webb’s Winter Formal.
Planning a major school event is a difficult task, requiring much time and effort. Students prepare early for bigger student events due to various things they need to keep in mind –– running through calendar committee, setting budget and price, and putting all details together, for example, decorations, theme, and food.
“When it’s a big event, we prepare months in advance,” said Albert Luo (‘27), sophomore vice president. “We started planning the Winter Formal in early November right after HoCo took place.”
In addition to working hard to efficiently plan events in a specific amount of time, StuGov also has to take into consideration the following events. For example, just a few months after the Winter Formal, Webb’s Prom will take place in the Spring. To tackle both events in the short span of time, different members of StuGov are assigned to different committees each dedicating their time to one specific event.
“All of StuGov is responsible for running events so everyone helps set up and clean events,” said Ken Rosenfeld, Dean of Campus Life. “However, not everyone is in the position to dedicate time to one specific event, so different event committees work hard to prepare both events.”
Unlike Homecoming and Prom, the Winter Formal does not happen every year; it is due to the two major factors that influence the preparation of the event: space for an extra Saturday in calendar for the Winter Formal and StuGov’s time to plan a new event.
Though promotion of Webb’s Winter Formal has not been publicized yet, many students look forward to the social event.
“I’ve never been to Webb’s Winter Formal, so I think this event will be a great experience and opportunity to socialize with other students,” Alan Zhou (‘27) said.
Many students eagerly await building memories with friends at fun in-school activities. However, some are hesitant to purchase tickets due to recent HoCo ticket prices.
“There are many factors contributing to the calculation of ticket prices, and StuGov always tries to be transparent with the community,” said Saira Bhagat (‘25), StuGov Executive Officer. “Ender Liu (‘25), our Finance Commissioner, sent out an email explaining ticket prices. In the end, we want to minimize prices and maximize our budget to make events as enjoyable as possible.”
Nevertheless, StuGov ensures that Winter Formal ticket prices are much lower than HoCo’s.
“This year, Winter Formal is partially meant to help offset the price of HoCo earlier in October,” Mr. Rosenfeld said. “That way, students can attend two dances while only paying a minimum price.”
Feedback and students’ opinions are vital contributions to StuGov’s efforts in improving school events.
“The whole purpose of StuGov is to plan a fun, engaging event that provides the community with a diverse amount of experiences during times of stress, so when events aren’t done properly, the community isn’t happy,” Saira Bhagat (‘25) said. “Student feedback gives us ideas to improve on future events, so they are essential to our mission.”
As student leaders in student government continue to plan and execute events that bringthe Webb community together, it is important to recognize their efforts. From planning Webb’s Winter Formal to rallying school spirit during Spirit Week, students in StuGov work diligently to bring fun and happiness to students.
“I am grateful for all the effort and time StuGov puts in to plan fun events for Webb’s community,” Melissa Lee (‘27) said.
