If you’ve ever heard shouts of jubilation from across campus or muffled music blaring from overly loud earphones, chances are Kenny Clay wasn’t far behind. A vital member of the Webb community, Kenny is spontaneous like a walking jazz piece. Whether he’s turning Jubilee into a curated production or chasing people down during zombie apocalypse with his cartoon-villain laugh, you’ll always hear Kenny living in the moment with unapologetic energy and irresistible charm. But he knows when to shift his tone, especially in the classroom, where he acts responsibly as a peer advisor. He loves exercising his voice in Dr. Cantwell’s Experimental Literature class and how unhinged yet beautiful mess it was—mirroring Kenny’s approach to life. Wynton Marsalis says that jazz is “the power of now. There is no script. It’s conversation.” The spirit of jazz not only embodies Kenny’s personality but also reflects his dreams of being a creative director, following in Marsalis’s footsteps at the Lincoln Center. As he begins his journey at Columbia University, Kenny will continue to live in the moment with his curated playlist playing through his earphones.
