Oliver Yuan spent his Webb years steadily finding his inner voice. Whether beatboxing in his free time or crafting creative works, he learned that self-expression could be shown in many ways. Originally from China and now living in California, Oliver joined Webb as a transfer student in his junior year and quickly found his voice in the humanities curriculum. He enjoyed classes like Gothic and Horror Literature & Culture, The Cold War Era, and Creative Nonfiction, where he could explore ideas deeply and reflect on his identity through different narratives. His confidence in his voice grew on stage as well. Although Oliver considers himself an introvert, he stepped far outside his comfort zone to play a parrot in Little Women. To Oliver, personal voice can be performed, shared, and sometimes even squawked. Outside the spotlight, Oliver found creative outlets in music and crafting intricate dioramas. Each individual hobby has helped him express parts of himself that words alone couldn’t capture. This fall, Oliver plans to go to UC Santa Barbra to study electrical engineering, aspiring to design systems, build games, and create online content, continuing his creative works. Wherever he goes, he will bring along a voice that’s imaginative, yet grounded from within.
