Walking into the weightroom for the first time, you may encounter some serious faces among the stone-cold weights, but one person you can always count on to light up a space is Hector Vargas. That is just what Hector represents: a warm and welcoming personality in traditionally sour spaces. His life is full of surprising contradictions. He may seem momentous rocking out to Metallica in the gym during functional fitness, but he will always be the first to lend a helping hand. Whether you are watching him support the wrestling team or hang out with his close friends, his laughter and joy lights up the space. Wrestling is an intense and individually focused sport, yet Hector found a way to create a family-like atmosphere with the team and Mr. Hansen, rallying his enthusiasm on the mat. To Hector, Mr. Hansen has been a defining character in his life, teaching him to be vulnerable and uplifting both in the gym and in classes. Hector will ooze his warm energy, studying robotics engineering at UC Riverside in the fall, enjoying the bright California sun and working with stone-cold robots.
