Joshua Hong

Joshua Hong, Staff Writer

Forget baseball bats and survival kits: in a zombie apocalypse, you’d want Joshua Hong (’28) on your side. And it’s not because he’s fearless (though he is), but because he can blaze through 400 meters in 57 seconds and still have the breath to plan his next move. Recently, Joshua even took on the 300 meter hurdles, an event he has never competed in before, surprising himself with one of his strongest performances. For Joshua, speed is never just about going fast; it’s about intention. When it comes to track, he often ponders pacing, technique, and strategy. That same mindset fuels Joshua’s passion for Formula 1. For him, the thrill lies not in watching cars fly past the finish line but in the skillful maneuvers, pit stops, and precision that define the sport. Away from athletics, Joshua applies the same deliberate mindset to his classes. Freshman year brought challenges, from finals to adjusting to Webb, but he approached them with the same discipline he shows on the track: carving out study schedules, analyzing problems, and staying on top of his work. Just as he resets between races, he unwinds after a long day of school by diving into fantasy and science fiction, with Brandon Sanderson’s “Words of Radiance”—his favorite book—keeping him grounded and focused. Whether it is sprinting down the track, following F1 circuits, or escaping into the pages of a novel, Joshua shows that speed, at its best, is thoughtful and strategic.
