Webb adults share their holiday music recommendations!

Examining VWS legacy: Who were the pioneers?
Aaron Yang (‘25) and Luke Smith (‘25) model the current political climate of division in the upcoming election. “The current political climate is quite a firestorm,” Aaron Yang (‘25) said. “While I don’t really follow politics, I can feel the tension even here at Webb sometimes.” Positive feelings between America’s two parties are at an all-time low, reflecting an increasingly divided nation.
The 2024 election and the “culture wars”: where do Webbies stand? — Part One
Jonathan Soe (27’), Rowan Stamires (26’), Mr. Anthony Flucker (Arts/Humanities Teacher), and Natalia Hickox (27’) pose for a picture after a successful escape from The Bridge Between at Quest Tavern. Students can explore three different types of escape rooms throughout the unbounded journey, ranging from fairytales to haunted dinners. Afterwards, students took what they learned in these rooms and buil it into their own for a display on the last day of the unbounded trip.

In the Liu Chueng Theater, dancers mimic a lion’s movement in costumes together with drums and cymbals performers. The lion dance originated in China 5000 years ago and is believed to bring good fortune to all. “I really enjoyed the lion dance performance,” said Petrina Ong (‘24) “It took me back home where there would be lion dances outside my building.”

In winter, most of Eastern Europe transforms into a silvery wonderland, where every tree is a sculpture, and each breath is a frosty whisper on the magnificent white canvas. “I love the beginning of winter in Russia when the snow is really bright and sparkling and it’s on all the birch trees,” Taya Sibichenkova (‘24) said. However, in the gentle Southern Californian climate, winter does not require the fortitude needed in Eastern Europe, but it does call for a different kind of resilience—the perseverance to keep our traditions thriving in a vastly different environment.

During this festive season at Webb, Nicolaas Grobler (‘24), Sohum Uppal (‘25), and Brandon Arteaga (‘24) speak with students, teachers and faculty about their New Years resolutions. Sohum Uppal conducts the interviews with Brandon Arteaga behind the camera. FInally, Nicolaas Grobler added a comedic touch when editing this video.

Ethan Norman (‘25) sits on Santa Claus’s lap, smiling with holiday cheer. As his personal assistant, he takes Santa around campus to reward hardworking Webbies with gifts and ask what students want for the holiday season before the campus leaves for break.

Students sit around the fireplace, roasting marshmallows and apples on sticks before the party begins. The party was at the Upper Dorms this year, decorated with Christmas lights. “I hope the party brings the community together, as well as dorm spirit and everything because its towards the end of the year, said Arthur Lu (‘24), a dorm prefect. “Many people are getting tired. We want to raise the holiday spirit for the last week of school finals.”

In the evening sun, students gathered at the museum steps in a chaotic mass. Some students took photos. Others waited for friends. And yet more continuously readjusted their clothing. But most attendees were wondering where the buses were. “It’s already 5:15,” said Ryan Ho (25’). “I thought the bus would be here by now.”

The DSPs Kevin Wang (‘24), Hannah Hao (‘24), and Kate Alvarez (25) smile at the camera as they prepare for the DSP Fall Social. Students can come to the front table and line up to get tickets for pie and free boba. From 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., students were coming up the gym hill to grab the free desserts. The boba truck, though, was the biggest hit of the night.

A splash of pink paint on a black background – we are familiar with this Pink Panther intro – but to Lauren Gutierrez (‘25), this 32-second video has a special place in her heart. This clip is the intro to Lauren herself, an energetic artist who embodies Pink Panther’s curiosity. She is always ready for new adventures, creating unforgettable memories with friends and exciting concerts that inspire her art. Even when the performers are not on her playlist, or the item is one of a kind in the thrift store, she welcomes them to her eclectic collection. Sparkling with various genres and dazzling with tunes, Lauren’s playlist is no less colorful – SZA, Brent Faiyaz, Frank Ocean, Taylor Swift, Rosalía, etc. Constantly seeking to broaden her horizon, Lauren's summer at Groton Program for Intercultural Exchange Conference in Groton, Massachusetts, with Webb was an eye-opening experience that allowed her to hold meaningful conversations about social issues like security, AI, and culture preservation on a global scale.
