Sophomore catcher Mikey Pino (‘26), who has already logged 17 hits and 16 runs with a season batting average of .436, extends his arms as he drives the outside pitch to right field for a double, putting the team in a great position to score. “I have felt really good in the box while hitting,” said Mikey Pino (‘26), “Recently I feel like I cannot get out, I feel amazing”

The Webb Schools’ baseball team is making waves in the San Joaquin league with an impressive 13-3 record, positioning themselves solidly in third place behind Pacifica Christian and Western Christian. Led by captains Brandon Arteaga (’24) and Ayan Kaushal (’24), the team has been showcasing exceptional talent on the diamond.

“The Webb Gauls are showcasing great potential for the 2024 season,” said assistant coach Scott Dixon. “We have a variety of underclassmen and upperclassmen that have demonstrated aspects of a team that can win it all. I think first year head Coach Adrian Alvarez has done a great job of bringing a youth perspective and baseball wisdom to the team and the boys feed off that. We are currently 13-3 and look to take down a good Western Christian team at home this Wednesday [3/27]”

This season marks one of the most successful runs for the Webb School baseball team in recent memory, reminiscent of their triumph in 2019 when they clinched a league title. Key players like Alec Kaushal (’26), Mikey Pino (’26), and Drake Drendel (’25) have been instrumental in the team’s success, contributing both defensively and offensively to secure crucial victories throughout the season.  With each game, they demonstrate determination, skill, and a passion for the sport.

“I think we have improved dramatically,” said Alec Kaushal (‘26). “From the first meeting in the gym at 6:45 AM, I knew this team would be more locked in.”

The March 24th game against Western Christian presents an opportunity for the team to further solidify their standing in the league. A victory would not only boost morale but also secure a second-place seed in the league tournament, putting them in prime position to contend for another league championship.

GO GAULS!

Ethan Normann
Ethan Normann, Staff Writer
If you spot a football cutting through the Webb sky, chances are that Ethan Normann (‘25) is nearby. As a quarterback for Webb’s football team, Ethan throws and catches his beloved football almost every day, whether with his friends during lunch time, at practices with teammates, or when playing high-stake games on Faculty Field. Just as Ethan hurls a football to his teammates, he launches himself at experiences and opportunities, embracing them like one might catch a swift, spiraling pass. Ethan credits Ms. Fisher’s American Society class as a “life-changing Webb experience, citing the games and materials as having fueled his growing passion for history. He has also developed a fine taste for all corners of the entertainment world: country and rap music, timeless movies like Forrest Gump, and TV shows like Brooklyn 99. His love for movies and TV shows has sparked an interest in the writers strike, as he hopes to advocate for the writers behind his favorite movies to get compensated. Junior year will be an exciting one for Ethan Normann as he aims for big goals: to make this the best year it can be write more meaningful content for the WCC, and to win even more football games. Brandon Arteaga
Brandon Arteaga, Editor of Sports
Shortstop on the Easton Prime baseball team, expert at Mario Kart, and Editor of Sports at the WCC, Brandon Arteaga (‘24) embodies Yoshi a friendly, carefree cartoon dinosaur. And much like a Yoshi, Brandon always brings positive energy to his surroundings, from leading the Webb baseball team and Easton Prime as captain to making goofy jokes around his friends. Just like how Yoshi’s constant exclamations of “Yoshi!” endear him to his fellow dinosaurs, Brandon expresses care of culture through play and language –– seeing Spanish as a medium to reconnect with his dad’s side of the family. Over the weekend, you may find him playing Call of Duty at his home in Upland, chilling with his two dogs, Mambo and Simba, or laughing through the out-of-the-box plot in the Regular Show. In addition to his generosity towards friends and family, Brandon is an avid sunset lover. His fondness for nature blossomed into a passion for climate change activism during his time at Webb, and he hopes to continue raising public awareness around this topic. Looking forward to the year, Brandon hopes to submit his works on time and explore diverse avenues of college baseball, exemplifying Yoshi’s adventurous spirit. And who knows? He may gain another inspiration to tackle global warming during a late-night drive to the beach or spontaneous stargazing venture –– and begin flutter-jumping!
