Walking past the library on a day DJ Spence is on deck is sure to make you want to go inside and join the dance party.
Reminiscing about her time at Webb as DJ Spence, Neria Spence (‘24) takes over the front desk of Fawcett Library one last time. Starting this tradition in 2023 at Webb, Neria brings together the community through different music and cultures.
“I have been able to make so many connections with both students and faculty members over interest in what I am playing. Whether is has been someone asking me what album I was playing, or sharing their love for a song, it has been so fulfilling to interact with such a diverse audience over a shared love of music,” Neria Spence (‘24) said. “I am really just inspired by the art people have created and given to the world, and it has been so interesting to further that by sharing this art with our community.”
Many Webb students are stressed out with work but having a dance break during lunch has made many Webbies feel a little more joy throughout their time here. From spotlighting different groups for cultural months to playing whatever music she wants, Neria has made Friday lunches something to look forward to.
“[Neria’s DJing] just a vibe,” Laura Caribé (’25) said. “It helped me de-stress, I loved listening to her play music.”
Neria did not want her tradition to disappear, so, next year, DJ Kenny will be in the house, recreating Neria’s mini raves in the library.
“I guess it just makes sense because we share this one record that we got together so it sort of bound me to this position next year,” Kenny Clay (‘25) said.
