Aaron Yang (’25) is a rising senior day student applying for Student Government Exec.

1. What are THREE (3) goals you would devote your time to pursuing as an Executive Officer (Exec) of Stu Gov?

a. Reestablishing the connection and communication between student government, the student body, and the administration so that decisions, concerns, and proposals for change can be heard and considered by all 3 parties.

b. Bring together all leadership groups, affinity groups, and even clubs so that we can work together as a whole school to dictate our Webb experience and work towards the “close-knit community” we claim we are.

c. Navigate the changing school model, traditions, and events so that we can transition smoothly and take advantage of the changes to reshape opportunities through which we can connect and experience Webb.

2. Find and transcribe a quote that you believe best exemplifies your approach to leadership. Be sure to cite the person who is credited for the quotation. (Ex. “It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur. You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership.” —Nelson Mandela)

“Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much.” —Hellen Keller

3. List THREE (3) skills or qualities you possess that you would utilize in your work as an Exec.

a. I have eyes: I will actively search for measures that can be taken to improve our experience at Webb and find solutions to problems we face.

b. I have ears: I will listen to any issues, concerns, or input and work to tackle them to the best of my ability.

c. I have a mouth: I will be a voice that advocates for the student body so that our needs are not hidden.

4. The 2024-25 school year will mark the first year of the unified Webb Schools of California. In 1-2 paragraphs, describe your vision for the 2024-25 school year, specifically addressing any challenges we may face during this transitional year, and how you, as an Exec, would address these challenges? (Please note: Addressing the challenges does not mean that you are expected to resolve them.)

Instead of addressing these shifts from the transition to a one-school model as challenges, I would like to consider them opportunities to improve, build upon, or rethink current traditions, ceremonies, and spirit events. I believe one of the major issues we will face in the coming years is deciding how events such as spirit week and Webb Idol should be conducted, as there is a disparity of opinions in Webb between the altering of traditions that have been a part of our school for many years. This is precisely why I believe that communication between all leadership groups is so important; we cannot hope to make informed decisions on important issues that impact the entire school body if we do not work as a coherent community. Within my position as Exec, I will make sure that discussions that have previously been confined to individual leadership groups such as Student Government will make it out of these small spaces so that we can begin to make decisions and voice opinions as a school.

5. Which of the Four Pillars of Stu Gov resonates most with you, your values, your interests, and your goals – Service, Advocacy, Joyful Engagement, or Collaboration? In one paragraph, please explain your connection with this pillar.

The advocacy pillar aligns most with my goals and my values. After spending a year on Student Government and a quarter working in the Advocacy group, I believe that StuGov would be able to function better in our role if we improve our advocacy. I would like to see Student Government as a group that we can rely on to get our voices out there, and to genuinely represent the Webb community through our leadership. I don’t doubt our ability to plan and manage engaging events, which is something I’m sure will continue to improve in the following years, but Joyful Engagement, Collaboration, and Service should be carried out based on the needs and hopes of the student body, which requires advocacy and the uplifting of student voices.

6. Senator Diane Feinstein is attributed with saying, “Ninety percent of leadership is the ability to communicate something people want.” What do you believe is the greatest desire of the student body?

I believe the student body wishes to feel influence over the events and rules that affect us during our everyday life at Webb, whether this is in the form of being able to participate in major decisions through voting, or simply have opportunities to express their personality and opinions at the social events provided throughout the year. With influence comes a sense of relevance, which is an important step for each of us to dictate what our experience at Webb will be. Our time here is short, and despite how it may feel daily, Webb should be remembered not only as a chapter in our lives where we grow academically but also where we grew as classmates, as friends, and as a community. 7. If you were given one school day, a budget of twenty thousand dollars, and complete authority to plan a program for the entire community… According to my calculations, $20,000 split among 400 people would lead to $50 for each. However, assuming giving each student $50 to DoorDash a delectable meal is out of my capabilities, I would like to plan an event that is designed start to finish by the community itself. Very rarely are we able come together as a school in an informal and fun setting and bond as a community through events that we all enjoy. Therefore, this program would strive to incorporate a diverse range of interests proposed by students so that we can truly celebrate the variety talents and passions within our school.

a. What would be your goals for the day?

b. What would the agenda/schedule look like?
