Water polo and cross country head to CIF

WSC water polo and VWS cross country are still alive in postseason play for the 2018 season. Water polo is heading to CIF after securing second place in league on Wednesday, October 24th. The results were finalized after a narrow defeat to Division III powerhouse Walnut High, the only league opponent Webb did not beat.

2018 was Webb’s first year in the Hacienda League, which Walnut High School has dominated in the past. Max Fargo (‘21), a varsity starter, said entering a new league was a challenge because the team “didn’t know what to expect” when facing new opponents. Nonetheless, he is proud of how the team has played, citing the close personal bonds amongst teammates as a primary reason for success this season.

VWS cross country, ranked 12th in the CIF Southern Section, approaches league finals on November 2nd. Their performance at next Friday’s meet will solidify their playoff position. If the team advances, they will attend CIF prelims on November 10th at Riverside Cross Country Course.

Webb athletes and coaches request that students support CIF teams this week. Water polo hosts Monrovia at 3:30 p.m. this Tuesday, and cross country runs at Irvine Regional Park at 1 p.m. this Friday. Go Gauls!

Out of 30 members on the wrestling team, only four upperclassmen and 4 other members qualified to participate in the CIF wrestling tournament. “This year was a pivotal year for Webb wrestling,” said Eric Hansen, VWS and WSC wrestling coach and humanities department faculty. “This year, our team has had the most members [it’s ever had], and suddenly, the possibilities felt bigger.”

Nicole Sampson (‘26), shoots against an opposing team, while an eager audience awaits the outcome of her shot. As Webbies reminisce on the team’s remarkable progression through CIF, the question of how this team made it this far begins to appear. “Everyone on the team gets along, and with new people coming in and stepping up in leadership, we have really good shot at CIF next year,” Geniya Parker (‘26) said.

In preparation for the incoming volleyball season, Jacob Zhang (‘26) practices serving the ball during the WSC Clinics. Despite the ascent to Les Perry Gym, prospective students interested in playing Volleyball this Spring will have to make the climb. “Volleyball clinic was a great way to get to know the players on the teams and coaches and to work on my skill,” Samantha Crawford (‘26) said. Whether it is the VWS or WSC volleyball clinic, the experience serves as an important building block for all players.

The steamy fog reflects a freezing temperature of 35 degrees fahrenheit at 7:00 a.m. in the morning. Despite the cold, swimmers persevere and continue training for their full triathlon by the end of the season, with breathtaking dawns as their constant companion.

Patrick Dóñez (’21), a day student from Upland, California, is one of this year's editors in chief. Last year, Patrick was the Editor of Opinion, which helped the transition into his leadership role for the 2020 – 2021 school year.  This year, he wants the WCC to lead conversations about different political and social topics in the Webb community. He enjoys listening to hip hop and RnB, and some of his favorite artists are Pusha T, Erykah Badu, and Modest Mouse. Patrick enjoys writing about his opinions and music, which is why joining journalism in sophomore year was perfect for him. During quarantine, he spent most of his time reading, skateboarding, and working on his magazine project Rx. After COVID-19, he is excited to finally get out of the house and nervous for the future of college and higher education.
