Delightful and entertaining Heloise Robertson (‘23) is a cherished personality at Webb for her friendly face and hilarious jokes. Our new Chief Copy Editor is a secretly talented chef, a caring camp counselor, an avid fan of horror literature, and the Webb Canyon Chronicle’s fastest editor. She has learned the importance of teamwork and empathy through participating in basketball and cross country. If you need a hand, hers is out to pick you up. Her personal goals this year are to keep a healthy self-care routine, starting with making her bed every morning before school. Heloise’s vision board for journalism includes making sure every article is timely, ensuring that she spots every grammar mistake, and including the student body in the publication better. Knock on this Head Editor’s Jameson dorm room, and you’ll find her eating sushi, watching Despicable Me, and lying on her stuffed elephant.

A look into the dorms that house over half of the students at Webb, and act as a new home away from home. Each dorm is unique, some having single floors, some having two, rooms with balconies, and rooms with entire backyards. Dorm life is the backbone of Webb, and it only makes sense that each dorm has its own culture, community, and spirit.

Situated right by the dining hall, the administration building may be a mysterious place to some students as they rarely enter the building. The admin building, however, serves as a key location for decision-making at Webb. Housing offices the Deans, the Director of Studies, and the Associate Head of Schools, the admin building brings different positions into one space, a space where the future of our community is decided.

Webb students dress in darker colors and exciting patterns for fall, bundled up in sweaters, hoodies, and adorable long sleeves. “As soon as the weather hits 60 degrees, the puffer jackets, overalls, boots, and sweatpants come out,” Clarence Deng (‘23) said. With these slowly decreasing temperatures, the layering skills and fun winter pieces slowly crawl out of boxes. We are excited to get all our style inspiration from fashionable fall-prepared Webbies.

Class of ‘23 performs a short rendition of Shrek starring Jolina Zhao (‘23), Angie Zhang (‘23), Emilia Bordage (‘23), and Ian Chang (‘23). In the Snoop Dogg Cinderella story, the Shrek posse makes a cameo appearance during the “wrong channel” segment. “It was fun to really come together as a class and I thought this year, our hard work would finally pay off,” said Ian Chang (‘23), who played Lord Farquaad in the senior skit. Many seniors mirror Ian’s sentiment, expressing that the hard work and lead-up to this year’s performance was what made the outcome all the more disappointing.

The scorching heat beats down on the players causing them to feel more fatigued during drills. “We had to persevere through the heat despite how our bodies felt,” said Jordan McCray (‘24), a football player. “I saw a couple of my teammates throwing up, it was so bad.”

The table is neatly presented with small “红包” (hong bao), red packets filled with “旺旺” (wang wang), wang wang crackers at every table setting. Menus with detailed descriptions of the cultural significance of each dish sit in the middle of the table. Students enthusiastically offered to pick up food, clear up the table, and appointed themselves as the table head upon instruction.

Zaneta’s favorite New Year’s dish is poon choi, a Cantonese dish that consists of various meats and seafoods with a few vegetables sprinkled in. The dish is heated and is significant during New Year’s as the work and complicated process that goes into cooking symbolizes unity and togetherness.

Pierre devours an incredible spread of Chinese dishes with friends, commemorating Chinese New Year’s Eve altogether. Some key dishes are the dumplings, the “小炒牛肉” (xiao chao niu rou) stir-fried beef in Chinese, the “红烧肉” (hong shao rou), braised pork in Chinese, and “酸菜鱼” (suan cai yu), the delicious green pickled fish in the center of the table. The meal before the actual day is called “年夜饭” (nian ye fan), New Year’s Eve dinner.

A drawing of Pui’s favorite New Year’s dish, the fish-shaped rice cake, a fun dessert that is also pleasing to the eye. Fish and “年糕” (nian gao), rice cake in Chinese, are both symbols for prosperity, so consuming this dish is extremely lucky for Chinese New Year.
