Lights turn on, music starts to play, and the crowd holds their breath as Jia Ni takes the stage. Feeling the music in her soul, Jia begins her carefully rehearsed dance; every move is accompanied by smiles and applause. Jia has been taking the stage of the Winter Dance Show every winter since her sophomore year, prepped with off-season training and surrounded by her closest friends. Her passion for dance flows into her daily life at Webb. Jia enjoys the satisfaction of cementing steps in her mind, much like the satisfaction of understanding concepts in her favorite classes: Advanced Studies Creative Nonfiction and Advanced Studies Thesis Seminar. The joy she feels when dancing is akin to the joy she feels with her friends when taking weekend trips to a cabin in Santa Barbara. Furthermore it connects to the joy she feels leading Asian Affinity in organizing Webb’s Asian Fashion Show and watching models strut down the stage, the personification of Jia’s hard work marching in tune to the music. Next year, Jia will take her moves, passion, and joy to bustling Manhattan where she will attend New York University. While the next chapter of her life may be filled with a few unknowns, rest assured Jia will keep dancing.
