A natural performer, Andrew Zhang is celebrated schoolwide for giving what many consider the best chapel talk in Webb history, performing magic for the whole school in the Liu Cheung Theatre. He has spent his time at Webb moving seamlessly between leadership positions, creative spaces, and the stage itself. Whether he’s serving as president of Math Club and Photography Club, working on yearbook during afternoon activities, or performing magic tricks at Jubilee, Andrew brings the same composed energy and curiosity of a magician to everything he does. Jubilee in particular stands out to him because it gives everyone a chance to perform and express themselves, something he embraced this year through his own magic act. Outside the classroom, Andrew enjoys watching musicals and magic shows, especially “Penn & Teller: Fool Us.” His appreciation for performance is reflected in his favorite quote from magician Dai Vernon: “Be natural.” To Andrew, the phrase applies far beyond magic itself. While every movement in a magic trick must appear effortless and authentic, he believes the same mindset matters in life: being genuine with the people around you and accepting situations naturally. Andrew’s fascination with technology began early, when he spent hours drawing on his grandfather’s old Windows XP and Windows 7 computers, which he remembers as “the coolest thing in the world.” That same curiosity later extended beyond technology into magic, another space where precision, timing, and control come together to create something marvelous. Whether learning tricks or exploring code, Andrew has been drawn to systems where small details produce striking results. That interest eventually developed into a passion for computer science and robotics. Next year, Andrew will attend the University of California, Berkeley to study computer science, where he hopes to spend time working in robotics labs and continue pursuing his interest in AI and robotics.
