Jerry Hu does not just build robots; he builds momentum. From Shanghai to Webb, that momentum has carried him through late nights spent on robotics, bike rides, and close-knit communities that kept him moving forward. But Jerry’s momentum did not start with robotics alone. It started in the small moments when he found himself pulled into Webb’s energy. When he was a freshman, one of his favorite memories was watching Webb Idol in his dorm while hyping up the seniors. Since then, Jerry has found different ways to keep that energy moving, from guiding dorm communities and showing up for teammates on the tennis court to pouring himself into robotics. Robotics has quickly become his full-time job, giving him some of his proudest memories. His proudest robotics memories range from reaching the state championship finals during his sophomore year to qualifying for the Robotics World Championship as a senior. Even when Jerry jokes that his advice to his freshman self would be “don’t do robotics,” the long hours gave him more than competitions; they gave him a close-knit community that made the work feel worth it and the wins feel shared. Outside of robotics, his love for biking helped shape his interest in environmental science, connecting him to nature and larger questions about sustainability beyond campus. As Jerry heads to the University of California, Santa Barbara, to study environmental science, he carries that momentum with him, not just from the robots he helped build, but from the teammates, bike rides, and shared goals that kept him and the community moving forward.
