Gianna Darden (‘26) is true to her Sagittarius sign, driven by an adventurous spirit, always eager to embrace new experiences, and takes on various leadership positions. As a peer advisor, admission ambassador, and Editor of News on the Webb Canyon Chronicle. Despite her busy schedule, Gianna is committed to living life to the fullest by exploring new places with friends, such as trails and long drives in new areas. Over the summer, she tried different cuisines like Chinese, Indian, and Thai, drove a jet ski, and traveled to Los Angeles. Not only is she passionate about having fun, but she also advocates for women’s rights and more accessible menstrual products. In her spare time, Gianna enjoys experimenting with strange recipes, watching movies, and playing wordscapes. Her favorite movie genres are fantasy and science fiction. She loves watching sitcoms and can predict movie plots since Sagittarians are known for their intelligence. As a history enthusiast, her favorite class is Honors Stories of Middle Eastern Conflict, where she will learn about different religions, cultures, and the history of The Middle East. Like a true Sagittarian, Gianna’s adventures continue as she aims to improve student body engagement and add humor to the WCC.

On October 29th, after an intense game, Webb varsity water polo players participated in the customary post-game high five with the opposing team, Pioneer High School. This game marked the beginning of CIF and ended with a promising score of 13-4. “Coming in as the underdogs brings a thrill of uncertainty to the playoffs and knowing we're playing our best is encouraging,” Neil Xu (‘27) said. As the team steadily progresses through CIF, their advancement raises the question: how did the team get here despite not participating in any league games?

Parents visited the Honors Spanish 3 class at Webb taught by Ms. Viviana Nicolosi. Students in the class sat in a circle on the ground as they engaged in activities and interacted with one another. Parents also participated in activities such as “Chocolate,” where parents were paired with their kids, clapping while shouting out: “chocolate.” As Carolyn Wang (‘26) shared, “on Family Day, I had a great time in my classes, especially in Spanish class, where we played games.”

Gianna Rabida (‘27) captures the Bridge Fire raging through Glendora’s Mountains while returning to Webb from an away volleyball game. Since September 8 – the day the fire started – it grew to 10,000+ acres in around two days, leaving Webb students anxious. “I’m afraid that I will have to evacuate my dorm in the middle of the night,” Gianna Rabida said. Boarders at Webb remain alert, anxious about possible evacuations as the fire rages through the Los Angeles and San Bernadino counties.

Freya Fu (‘26) goes to prom as a sophomore–Say what?! Isaac Nicolosi (‘25) already planned on taking her as his guest and she figured since she was his guest, it needed a proper request. “I thought it would be funny to surprise him with a poster,” Freya said. “It was an impulsive decision to make him the poster.” These two ended up having a great time (as friends) after Isaac said yes and took her to prom.

The Bonnie Johnson Hall stands as the latest addition to Webb’s campus, containing modern technology and an underground storage space allotted to storing fossilized tracks. This addition was gifted to Webb by donors and is a result of a lengthy yet rewarding construction process.

Jay Pang (25’) and Aaron Yang (25’) wear masks while working with Armen Xue (25’) on an assignment, modeling a new era in COVID-19 control at Webb. Webb no longer requires mandatory isolation for cases without severe symptoms due to a decrease in the severity of COVID-19 seen in LA County. “This is a welcome change, especially for international boarders since they don’t need to look for somewhere to stay if they get COVID” Armen said. Webb used to enforce a five-day mandatory isolation period off-campus for students who test positive, which required students to find a place to stay in case of infection.

In preparation for the incoming volleyball season, Jacob Zhang (‘26) practices serving the ball during the WSC Clinics. Despite the ascent to Les Perry Gym, prospective students interested in playing Volleyball this Spring will have to make the climb. “Volleyball clinic was a great way to get to know the players on the teams and coaches and to work on my skill,” Samantha Crawford (‘26) said. Whether it is the VWS or WSC volleyball clinic, the experience serves as an important building block for all players.

As Webb students depart from campus to enjoy the rest of the holiday season, it provides the perfect time to look back and see how Webb decorated their spaces to celebrate this festive season. This year, the Price Dining Hall is displaying a gorgeous, 20-foot Christmas tree, beautifully lit and decorated. Lighting up the Christmas trees with various colorful ornaments, Webb’s community service afternoon activity contributed greatly to the setup and assembling of the artificial tree. “It was very fun to set up the tree and bring holiday cheer!” Frannie Hinch (‘25) said. For many others, decorating the campus for community service has been rewarding to see the joy they bring to students, faculty, and staff.

The front entrance to the Raymond Alf Museum lawn recently underwent renovations that will result in an accessible pathway with native plants. In front of the building is a wooden plot containing native plant species planted by the Native Plant Society. “It’s great that our work has a spotlight in one of the more important areas on campus” said Theresa Hu (‘24). Many students know of the added path being built but few have noticed the native plants surrounding it.
