Chills of fear flow at the Prefects’ Fall Social: Halloween edition
Webb students surround Roberto Ayala, world languages department faculty, and Elena Petrova (‘25) for the first storytelling event of this academic year. The seats quietly fill up as students start to exit their classrooms. With eager attentiveness, the audience absorbs themselves into Mr. Ayalas story about language. “For every story, there’s this one point where they say something that completely changes your perspective,” Hanbo Xu (‘25) said.
Storytelling builds community
House of Allan: the intriguing exhibit of Will Allan, Humanities Department Faculty, extensive and unique collection of Webb gear. This exhibit was put up for Alumni Weekend but is here to stay for at least a week. It includes Mr. Allan’s collection of clothes that he has gotten since he became a part of the Webb community in 1992; some pieces are vintage while some are new. T-shirts are an actual artifact so it is exciting to me as a librarian to have shirts from a long period of time that are connected to Mr. Allan, whether that is him as a student, teacher, or as a coach, said Dr. Mark Dzula, Director of Teaching and Learning Resources.

Actors perform in the house during dress rehearsal. The actors stand in the center aisle, preparing to fight. The performing area is decorated with small set pieces and scarves hung on the feature walls. “For the show that were doing, it really does suit the plot and the characters. It really works with the show, and Im excited to see how audiences react to it,” said Sydney Becker (‘24), an actor in the fall play.
The 2023 fall play adopts unconventional staging
As Webbies attempted to register for the SAT this year, many of them were met with similar results: every testing center was full. Following the closure of many test centers across the state due to the pandemic, many students at Webb have been forced to cross county and — in extreme cases — state lines to take the SAT. “I signed up for [my August SAT] in July,” Annie Han (‘24) said. “I think if I signed up in June, I wouldn’t have had to go that far.” Still, as students try to sign up earlier and earlier, many of them struggle to reserve a seat.

Webb students gathered at the quad listening to Mariachi classics such as “El Rey” by Vicente Fernandez and Son De La Negra by Mariachi Vargas. Among dancing and singing, students shared agua frescas, taquitos, and tamales. Latinos Unidos and the DEI department goes all out for this anticipated event, bringing all parts of the Webb community together. “It was really fun last year, I was excited for it,” Lucas Cardenas (‘25) said. “I hope they make it an annual event.”

Webb students of all different grades cheer as students Tony Gao (‘26) and Julia Fenner (‘23) battle it out in the middle of Stockdale center as Eric Hansen, Humanities Department faculty, refereed the event. Webb night was packed with different games and events, and as students began to disperse from arm wrestling, they headed over to the activity they had signed up for or just to cheer on fellow classmates.

Red lights shine against the backdrop advertising the day student prefect (DSP) Winter Social, as a drum set awaits to be played by the Tonics, Webb’s very own student band. The DSP social was filled with Valentine’s Day decorations and activities and the event ended with The Tonics performing a few songs. “Since the social happened later in February, we chose to go with a Valentine’s Day theme,” said Kaylynn Chang (‘23), head day student prefect. “We just wanted to create a fun day for everyone.” Many students stayed in the Hooper Community Center during lunchtime to enjoy the festivities the DSPs prepared.

Caroline Metz (‘22), Taren Duffy (‘22) and Abbey Cook (‘23) happily model their team rings. The three girls were the starting forwards on the Vivian Webb soccer team during the ‘21-’22 season. The two alums continue to cheer on the team even when at college.

A popular bi-annual event hosted by the Art Club, Art Café showcases student-submitted art in various forms: paintings, ceramics, drawings, collages, photography, digital art, animation, and more. Venturing beyond merely displaying these works, Fall Art Café 2022 inspired more artistic creativity by encouraging more student interactions with the event. Apart from featuring an art display, Art Café also provided an artist marketplace (a space where artists can sell their work), an open-mic session, a post-it note wall, and a station where anyone can doodle on a big piece of construction paper. At the entrance to this flurry of activity is this event’s theme: Dawn, a reflective departure from the pandemic’s burdens and a hopeful outlook for the future.

Marina Saeger (‘23) and Sydney Morales (‘25) pass by the Administration Office, emphasizing the strong student-faculty relationship developed due to faculty residences on campus, an aspect unique to boarding schools. “I’m really close with the on-duty faculty at South Hutch, part of that is because they act like our family on campus,” said Marina.

This debate represents the political polarization that has heightened in the last few years with recent primaries and the Biden impeachment inquiry. I’m an inherently hopeful person, but in following the elections as its happening now, its frustrating,” said Dr. Theresa Smith, Head of School and Modern Constitutional Debates teacher. American politics has devolved to just yelling at each other.

Isamar Theobald (25) stands conflicted holding both her Homecoming dress and Halloween costume. With the upcoming Webb event and Halloweekend celebrations, many Webb students have voiced their thoughts and opinions on the poor planning. The student body not only felt strongly about the planning but also wondered why the theme couldn’t be Halloween related. “I’m bummed out that Hoco falls on Saturday the 28th when it takes away time from my Halloween plans,” Isamar said.
Homecoming takes over Halloweekend
The north side of the science building is blocked off due to the construction of the Bonnie Johnson Hall, a state-of-the-art science laboratory. The construction for the classroom began in early summer of this year and continued into the school year. “The construction is planned to be finished during the early second semester of this year.” Said Michael Hoe, Assistant Head of Schools. The students have been anticipating the finished result of the classroom.

After executives Annie Han (‘24) and Jonathan Rosales-Cardenas (‘24) announced the seniors as the winners of both Spirit Week and Spirit Night, the class of 2024 came together in celebration and cheered with their trophy.
Spirit Week replaces Theme Week for the 2023-2024 school year
To end Spirit Night, the entire Student body dances to “Thriller” by Michael Jackson. In addition to their own dance, each grade choreographed a section of “Thriller” for their own class to dance to. The seniors ended their section with an iconic Michael Jackson pose to cue the rest of the grade for the first ever Spirit Night Unity Dance. “I thought it was fun, but felt as though it wasn’t a good replacement for the skits during theme night,” said Ken Lin (‘24)
