Upon meeting Chloe Wang (’24), her laid-back personality reveals itself. Besides spending a relaxing summer back home in China, Chloe also ventured into the Inner Mongolia, casually unwinding on a camel’s back while she rode through the desert and grasslands. As she returns to Webb, Chloe continues to express her carefree nature when hanging out with her friends at the Claremont Village, playing video games, experimenting with makeup, and watching anime. Chloe seeks to expand and learn more about her own culture, especially when she is away from home, and especially while she is experiencing new and different ways of life, such as living at a boarding school in a different country. Chloe has the quiet strength of immersing herself in her own world and is focused on improving her journalistic skills and her knack for innovation. As the Webb Canyon Chronicle’s Social Media Manager, Chloe hopes to increase the readership for the website by promoting the WCC on social media. Cross paths with Chloe Wang on campus, and her dynamic personality is impossible to miss.

Hanbo Xu ('25), in his formal attire, enjoys a glass of apple cider, one of the many refreshments available during the pre-prom reception in front of the Alf Museum. “The cider was extremely extravagant, lavish, and rich, while the food looked very appetizing,” Hanbo said. “Holding these delicate cups made me feel like Gatsby. The toppings on the cupcakes glistened in the sun, as mouthwatering flavors invited a tsunami of joy in my brain.”

Student researcher Elaine Tang (‘24) created a comic for the Fossil Fest to explain the two ways fossils are formed in a tarpit. “I chose to explain my research by comic because there are a lot of kids coming to the [Fossil] Fest,” Elaine said. “They are all very interested and even painted on my comic with their favorite colors.” Fossil Fest is one of the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology Discovery Day events during which scientists and museum visitors are invited to celebrate paleontology.

Students embrace nature through exploration of museums, zoos, care centers, and natural habitats. “I realize that there are so many plants and animals native to California, and this is something others do not normally have,” Tina Wang (‘24) said. Tina Wang (‘24), posing in a sleeping position, went back to China to celebrate Lunar New Year during February break. “Going straight back to school after travelling has always been a challenging process for me,” Tina said. Nathan Silva, Student Services Coordinator, stands beside the package shelf with the packages piled up even though it is just the beginning of school after winter break. Students on the other hand also use this opportunity as a way of bonding. “I love talking to Mr. Silva while getting my packages,” Emily Shao (‘26) said. “We actually know each other because I get so many packages.” Due to the “exchange of gifts,” the hard work also brought Mr. Silva deeper into the Webb community.

Students sit around the fireplace, roasting marshmallows and apples on sticks before the party begins. The party was at the Upper Dorms this year, decorated with Christmas lights. “I hope the party brings the community together, as well as dorm spirit and everything because it's towards the end of the year," said Arthur Lu (‘24), a dorm prefect. “Many people are getting tired. We want to raise the holiday spirit for the last week of school finals.”

All these events were packed into the weekends of October, making students busier than usual. “I brought my computer to Homecoming to fill my college application, because the date is just three days before the deadline,” said Tina Wang (‘24). Students are unsatisfied with the Calendar Committee's plan for October and call for a more reasonable schedule for next year.

The north side of the science building is blocked off due to the construction of the Bonnie Johnson Hall, a state-of-the-art science laboratory. The construction for the classroom began in early summer of this year and continued into the school year. “The construction is planned to be finished during the early second semester of this year.” Said Michael Hoe, Assistant Head of Schools. The students have been anticipating the finished result of the classroom.

Located next to Crossroads, McMillin Park opened, but has not been used officially yet. This sunken area has long been considered an unusable part of the school. However, this area was a stone hut where Larry McMillin, a former Webb teacher, taught his classes decades ago. “I had my job interview there when I first came to Webb,” said Taylor Stockdale, Head of Schools. “Students used to climb to the top of the house, and it was just a fun place to be. It was such an indispensable part of Webb.” Recently, the class of 1967 funded the renovation of this area for the purpose of honoring Mr. McMillin.
