Emily Li (’24) is not your usual iPad kid. You might see her using her tablet, but trust me: she isn’t playing Roblox. She is a passionate artist who loves to create artwork on her iPad. Emily‘s favorite thing to draw is the people around her, focusing on experimenting with colors. She also enjoys dancing to popular K–pop stars IU and Mamamoo. Just like her top-notch dancing skills, she has a crazy tolerance for spice – do not be surprised when you see her empty bottle of sriracha. However, Emily’s dynamic personality is not confined to her personal endeavors. As head peer advisor, she steps into a leadership role that suits her naturally empathetic and social nature. She finds joy in building bridges, fostering connections, and offering a sympathetic ear to those around her. One of Emily’s main goals this year is to give as much love as she can to the world. At the Webb canyon chronicle is to improve the diversity of articles and further refine the website after designing it. In a world where each stroke of her digital pen, every dance step, and all her interactions paint a picture of her vibrant self, Emily Li stands not only as a multitalented artist, leader, athlete and beacon of positivity, illuminating everything she touches with her unique and colorful perspective.

During the Hiking the Trans-Catalina Trail Unbounded Trip, participants endure one of the most demanding yet rewarding backpacking trails. Students encountered beautiful scenery and built new friendships. “This trip pushed me out of my comfort zone, and we ended up camping in some incredible spots,” Frannie Hinch (‘25) said.

A second-semester senior eager to learn new skills before the school year ends, she finds dancing to be a fun, enriching, and challenging pastime. “I’ve been watching tutorials on Little Red Book [a Chinese equivalent of Instagram], practicing individually in my room, and asking friends for advice on how to improve,” Jenny said.

Just only few minutes after Dr. Smith’s email went up, a STAS discussion was initiated by a Clarence Deng (‘23)’s question of “What does Collegiate mean?” Student responses expressed both confusion and anger, wondering where the word “Collegiate” had appeared from. Some students even satirically closed their email to the chain with “Sincerely, name, Webb Collegiate class of 202#.”

Although staged hyperbolically, this graphic reflects many people’s fears toward the powerful capabilities of emerging AI: will they replace human work in the future? Cindy Lopez, Executive Assistant, finalizes the plans for Dies Mulieris and Men in the Arena. She is responsible for planning the logistics of the event, including communicating with outside organizations and assigning activity groups on a spreadsheet. “I made sure everyone got something out of this experience,” Ms. Lopez said. Without her work behind the scenes, the many moving pieces of the symposium would have fallen apart.

A popular bi-annual event hosted by the Art Club, Art Café showcases student-submitted art in various forms: paintings, ceramics, drawings, collages, photography, digital art, animation, and more. Venturing beyond merely displaying these works, Fall Art Café 2022 inspired more artistic creativity by encouraging more student interactions with the event. Apart from featuring an art display, Art Café also provided an artist marketplace (a space where artists can sell their work), an open-mic session, a post-it note wall, and a station where anyone can doodle on a big piece of construction paper. At the entrance to this flurry of activity is this event’s theme: Dawn, a reflective departure from the pandemic’s burdens and a hopeful outlook for the future.

We gathered 50 samples of students’ annual Spotify Wrapped features, which summarize users’ favorite genres, artists, and songs in quantitative and qualitative statistics. The release of “Nxde,” the title track in k-pop girl group (G)-idle’s newest album, sheds light on the sexualization of women in media and how search engines perpetuate unjust stereotypes. Taking inspiration from the timeless icon Marilyn Monroe and her experiences, “Nxde” raises conversations about society’s paralleling criticisms and disrespectful portrayals of females. This collage pieces together key elements from “Nxde”‘s music video, an iconic outfit of Monroe from “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)”, and screenshots of search engines and graphs that further the podcast’s main discussion.

Jolina Zhao (‘23) gazes into her mirror in South Hutch holding a green crop top. Every morning, boarders must choose an outfit from their clothing options located in a closet with limited space. Though students bring items of their liking to their dorms, choosing an outfit that fits Webb’s dress code can limit the self-expression for some students who, some days, want to be comfortable or wear a specific item. “Sometimes, I just wear a long shirt to cover my sweat shorts because I want to stay comfortable,” Jolina said.

Class of ‘23 performs a short rendition of Shrek starring Jolina Zhao (‘23), Angie Zhang (‘23), Emilia Bordage (‘23), and Ian Chang (‘23). In the Snoop Dogg Cinderella story, the Shrek posse makes a cameo appearance during the “wrong channel” segment. “It was fun to really come together as a class and I thought this year, our hard work would finally pay off,” said Ian Chang (‘23), who played Lord Farquaad in the senior skit. Many seniors mirror Ian’s sentiment, expressing that the hard work and lead-up to this year’s performance was what made the outcome all the more disappointing.

The Food For Thought group watches Food Director Armando Amezcua demonstrate how to properly pack a lunch box. To start off their Unbounded Program, students helped dining hall staff prepare sack lunches for other Unbounded Programs on that day. They divided responsibilities and formed an assembly line to fill, seal, and pack food boxes, and through this experience, Webb students received a glimpse of Webb dining hall staff’s daily responsibilities.

As day students returned to campus on Tuesday, January 4th, they waited inside their vehicles at the gym parking lot to be tested. The line was very long as each student had to wait for 15 minutes for the test result. Only students with negative test results were allowed on campus. Nevertheless, for the next three days, Webb still experienced an increase of COVID-19 cases, with seven students who tested positive on Friday.
